Casa Loma

The story

Financier and soldier Sir Henry Pellatt commissioned Casa Loma as a hilltop residence in the early twentieth century. Architect E. J. Lennox assembled towers, battlements, grand rooms, service spaces, tunnels, stables and gardens into a private version of a European castle.

Pellatt's finances collapsed, and he left the house less than a decade after moving in. That short private life gives the building its tension. It is both a confident performance of wealth and an unfinished dream, with practical corridors and incomplete rooms behind the ceremonial facade.
