Carnegie Hall ( KAR-nig-ee) is a concert venue at 881 Seventh Avenue, between 56th and 57th Streets, in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Designed by architect William Burnet Tuthill and built by its namesake, industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, the venue is one of the most prestigious in the world for both classical music and popular music.

The story

Andrew Carnegie paid for this hall, and it opened on May 5, 1891. Tchaikovsky crossed the Atlantic for the opening festival and conducted his own Marche solennelle. He was paid roughly $2,500 for the week, close to a full year's salary for a conductor at the time.

The architect, William Burnet Tuthill, was thirty-four and largely unknown. He was also an amateur cellist and a singer, which is likely how he got the commission. Steel framing was not yet common, so the building carries itself on masonry walls up to four feet thick.

In 1960 the New York Philharmonic left for Lincoln Center and the hall was slated for demolition. The violinist Isaac Stern led the campaign against it, and the city bought the building for $5 million.

Look up from the sidewalk before you go in. Above the hall are the tall studio windows where artists lived and worked for more than a century. The last resident, the poet Elizabeth Sargent, moved out in 2010.
