A7 was a club in New York City that between 1981 and 1984, was a main location of the New York hardcore scene. The tiny space was located on the southeast corner of East 7th Street and Avenue A in Manhattan's East Village, and operated by Dave Gibson and Doug Holland.
The story
Between 1981 and 1984 this corner of East 7th Street and Avenue A held a tiny room that New York hardcore mostly came out of. Dave Gibson and Doug Holland ran it. Agnostic Front, Cro-Mags, Reagan Youth, The Mob, Urban Waste, The Abused, Kraut, Antidote, Heart Attack, The Stimulators and The Violators all played A7, some of them weekly.
The point was the size. There was no stage worth the name and no distance between the band and the room, which is the sound those records are trying to reproduce.
It reopened under a new name in 1997 and is now Niagara. Bands still play in the same room. A plaque went up in October 2013.
Do not expect a shrine. It is a bar on a corner, and the history is the room itself.
