The Ariston Bathhouse raid in 1903 was the first anti-gay police raid on an establishment in New York City. It resulted in thirty-four arrests, sixteen charges of sodomy, and twelve trials, five of which have transcripts.
The story
At nine in the evening on 21 February 1903, police raided the Ariston Bathhouse, off Broadway near 55th Street. About 78 men were inside. They arrested 34 of them. At least 16 were charged with sodomy and 12 went to trial. Of the five trials whose transcripts survive, three ended in guilty verdicts, one in a conviction with a recommendation of mercy, and one in a mistrial. Two of the convictions were appealed. The owner, John Begley, was charged with keeping a disorderly house.
It was not spontaneous. Undercover officers and the Society for the Prevention of Crime had been building the case for weeks.
This is the first documented anti-gay police raid on a business in New York City, 66 years before Stonewall. Nothing marks the spot. Stand near the corner and know what the address used to be.
