Winston Churchill

Winston Churchill led Britain through most of the Second World War as prime minister, from 1940 to 1945, and served again from 1951 to 1955. Before that he had been a soldier, a war correspondent and a cabinet minister, and all his life he wrote, history and memoir above all. His mother was American.

In August 1943 he met Franklin Roosevelt in Quebec City, at the Citadelle and the Château Frontenac, to plan the invasion of Europe. On the Quebec walk you stand at both: the hotel's towers above Dufferin Terrace, and the star shaped fortress on the heights, where the governor general's residence still is. At Harvard he spoke in Sanders Theatre, the wooden hall inside Memorial Hall; if a concert is on while you are in town, buy a ticket for the room alone.
