Kondiaronk

Kondiaronk was a chief of the Wendat, or Huron, people of Michilimackinac, known to the French as Le Rat. He was famous as an orator and a strategist, and after years of war between the French, the Haudenosaunee and the nations of the Great Lakes he threw his skill behind a general peace.

In the summer of 1701 about 1,300 delegates from some forty nations gathered at Montreal to make it. Kondiaronk fell ill with a fever during the talks and died on August 2, days before the Great Peace was signed. He was given a grand funeral in which French and Indigenous mourners took part, and was buried at the Notre-Dame church. On the Montreal walk, the lookout named for him on Mount Royal, the Kondiaronk Belvedere, has the best view in the city, over downtown to the river.
