Franklin D. Roosevelt

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected president four times, more than anyone before or since, and led the United States through the Great Depression and most of the Second World War. In 1921 an illness left his legs permanently paralyzed, and in twelve years as president he was rarely seen in public in his wheelchair.

In August 1943 he and Winston Churchill met in secret in Quebec City, at the Citadelle and the Château Frontenac, to plan the Allied invasion of Europe. On the Quebec walk, stand on Dufferin Terrace under the hotel's towers and you are beside the rooms where it was argued out. At Harvard, where he graduated, he came back in 1936 to speak at the university's three hundredth birthday, on the lawn beside Memorial Church.
