Inside MoMA, on footprints

The map on your phone goes grey the moment you step inside. This is a schematic of the Museum of Modern Art, drawn by us, not to scale, with the rooms where they really sit. Floors 5, 4 and 2 are the collection's one long story, 1880 to today, and the chronology starts at the Sculpture Garden end of Floor 5. Tap the rooms you want in the order you want them, and footprints walk the route with honest times.

The facts, checked on the museum's own pages: 11 West 53rd Street, between Fifth and Sixth. Open daily 10:30 to 5:30, Fridays to 8:30. Adults $30, seniors $22, students $17, sixteen and under free. Friday evenings 5:30 to 8:30 are free for New York State residents only, reserved ahead with proof of residency; everyone else pays. Tickets are timed; the Sculpture Garden is included. The E or M train to 5 Av/53 St stops at the door.

Times marked with a tilde are estimates until one of our surveyors walks that corridor with the recorder. A walked corridor shows its measured minutes. That is the footprint rule: a person who knows the way walks it once, and the walk becomes the map.

Tap rooms on the sheet, in the order you want to see them. The Grand Staircase is added by itself when your route changes floors.

This page is a drawing and a plan, not the museum. Hours, tickets and closures live at metmuseum.org. Our schematic simplifies; the building will always be bigger than the sheet. Gallery contents shift over years, so we name wings and anchors, never gallery numbers. Every city's corridors live in The Walks; a saved walk follows your sign-in to any device.
