A free map that works anywhere in the world, and becomes your private guide the moment you need one. It is not a navigation app. Its whole job is to make sure nothing gets between a traveller and the moment they came for.
A Reinvestment USA project proposal for the Plateau Strategy Solution Lab.
THE MOMENT
A man once stood at the top of Capitol Hill, seeing it for the first time, and said he had wanted this moment for fifty years. The destination was never the hard part. The hard part is the last hour before it: getting lost, running out of time, the ticket line, the overcharge, the small frictions that pile up and quietly steal the thing a person came across the world for. This guide exists to protect that moment.
THE PROBLEM, PLAINLY
Nearly all of the time, even a seasoned traveller struggles somewhere on a trip, and a museum or a new city hands you no single best experience of it. You arrive, and you spend your first and most precious hour solving logistics instead of being there. The enemy of a trip is rarely the place. It is the friction in front of it.
THE IDEA, AS ONE FLOW
One free tool. Open the map and it helps you go anywhere in the world. When you want a tour, you pre-select it, and it sets itself up so you make it there in time. When you are nearby, it wakes and does a guide's work. You never worry about being lost, because footprints show you where to go and an indoor overview lets you see the whole area. You do not worry about being overcharged, or about losing the precious time between you and the place you came for.
INDOOR AND OUTDOOR, ONE GUIDE
The split is the point where GPS gives up. Outdoors, your phone knows where it is, so the guide names what is around you as you pass it. Indoors, where the map goes grey, the footprints of the person who walked it before you become the way through, and the guide speaks each described point as you reach it. Face the wrong way and the footprints vanish, so you turn until they come back. No arrows to read, nothing to interpret.
WHY THIS IS REINVESTMENT USA
This reinvests in a very human asset: the experience of a place, and the people who make their living helping others find it. The traveller never pays, and the tool takes nothing from the person using it, no sold location and no bait. The revenue comes from the places that want their visitors to arrive un-lost and on time, hotels, attractions, museums, tour operators, and from making the good part of a guide reachable to everyone rather than only to those who can afford a private one. A guide used to be a luxury. This makes it ordinary.
WHAT IS ALREADY REAL, AND WHAT IS THE LEAP
Most of the spine exists in pieces today: the worldwide map and trip planner, the tour that gets you there in time, the proximity guide that speaks a place as you near it, and the footprints with their indoor overview. This is mostly an honest job of joining parts that already work.
Two things are the real leap, and they are worth naming rather than hiding. Painting the footprints onto your live camera view is augmented reality, the most magical part and the hardest, and it needs a proper phone app rather than a web page. And "anywhere in the world, indoors" cannot come from walking every corridor ourselves, it grows from travellers and from the places themselves, which is a real business to build, not just a feature.
There is a working demo of the direction gate, and a fuller blueprint of this idea, linked from the site. A prototype of the guide exists and awaits its first real walk. This is an idea, not an offer, and it collects nothing from you.
