Footprints, a guide that walked here before you

When you face the right direction, footprints appear. That is the whole interface.

The problem

Getting lost does not happen on the road. It happens in the last four hundred metres, inside the airport, between the arrivals door and the train, in the places where the map on your phone goes grey and the signs assume you have been here before. That is also where a traveller is most tired, most burdened and least able to ask.

The idea

Someone who knows the way walks it once, with a phone recording. What they leave behind is a footprint trail: the line a real person actually walked, kept with its length and roughly how long it takes.

The next traveller opens the guide and simply turns on the spot. Facing the right way, footprints appear on the screen ahead of them, the prints of the person who walked it before. Facing the wrong way, there is nothing. No arrows, no re-routing voice, nothing to interpret. The emptiness is the message, and turning until the footprints come back is a thing a tired person does without being taught.

What is deliberately not collected

The guide runs on the traveller's own phone; their position is not sent to our server, and no account is needed. The recorded trails are made by our own team, on our own sign-in, walking public corridors, an airport hallway, a station concourse. A trail keeps the line, its length and roughly how many minutes it takes. It keeps no name, no clock and no visitor: "the corridor takes nine minutes" is a map, and that is all the map ever needs to be.

Where it goes

The first corridor is SeaTac Airport, the arrivals door to the Link light rail platform, because that is where our own customers land. After that, every place that receives tired strangers has the same four hundred metres: hotels off a transit stop, cruise terminals, stadiums, hospitals, campuses. An operator whose visitors arrive lost is the customer; the traveller never pays.

What this page does not say

This is the shareable half. The working half, how a recorded walk is validated and when it is refused, when the guide chooses silence over a guess, and how a walk proves a route fit to hand a stranger, is built, tested and deliberately not described here.
