The story
The federal government evicted this market. In 1931 Centre Market, downtown on Pennsylvania Avenue, was pulled down to clear ground for the Federal Triangle, and the wholesalers who worked there refused to scatter. They had formed an association in 1928, bought four acres out here by Florida Avenue, and laid the street grid themselves. Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Morse, Neal and Penn were cut into the site by the merchants who needed them. They also negotiated a spur off the B&O so trains could roll in to the market floor.
Union Terminal Market opened in February 1931 with stalls for seven hundred vendors and its own cold storage. A 1962 city ban on selling meat and eggs outdoors ended the open-air trade. The hall you walk into now went up in 1967 and reopened as a food hall in 2012.

A este mercado lo echó el gobierno federal. En 1931 derribaron el Centre Market, en plena Pennsylvania Avenue, para despejar el terreno del Federal Triangle, y los mayoristas que trabajaban allí se negaron a dispersarse. Se habían asociado en 1928, compraron cuatro acres aquí, junto a Florida Avenue, y trazaron ellos mismos las calles. La Cuarta, la Quinta, la Sexta, Morse, Neal y Penn las abrieron los propios comerciantes porque las necesitaban. También negociaron un ramal del ferrocarril B&O para que los trenes entraran hasta el mercado.
El Union Terminal Market abrió en febrero de 1931 con puestos para setecientos vendedores y cámaras frigoríficas propias. En 1962 la ciudad prohibió vender carne y huevos al aire libre, y con eso se acabó el comercio a cielo abierto. La nave en la que entras hoy es de 1967 y reabrió como mercado gastronómico en 2012.
