An outdoor granite sculpture of Alexander Hamilton by Carl Conrads is installed in Central Park, Manhattan, New York. Hamilton's son, John C. Hamilton, commissioned Conrads to sculpt this statue, which was dedicated on November 22, 1880, and donated to the city.
The story
The day this statue was unveiled, the crowd gave up and went into the Met.
November 22, 1880 was cold and windy. About 500 people stood here between the East Drive and the Great Lawn while Alexander Hamilton's son, John C. Hamilton, handed his father's likeness to Mayor Edward Cooper. Then the weather won, and the speeches moved indoors to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a short walk east.
Look at the stone before the face. Not bronze, not marble: Westerly granite, cut by Carl Conrads for the New England Granite Works. Granite fights the chisel, so the wig, collar and shoe buckles all cost real labor. One hundred and forty six years outdoors, and the surface is still sharp.
Two things repay a close look. Thirteen stars ring the top of the pedestal, and a sword, a scabbard and a tricorne hat sit near its base. The face is borrowed from Giuseppe Ceracchi's 1778 bust, so the head is a young officer wearing an older man's clothes. The inscription is shorter still: PRESENTED BY JOHN C. HAMILTON, 1880.
