The story
James Smithson never saw this country. He was an English chemist, born in Paris, the illegitimate son of the first Duke of Northumberland, and he died in Genoa in 1829 without ever crossing the Atlantic. His will left everything to a nephew, then added one line: if the nephew died without heirs, the money should go to the United States, to found at Washington an establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge among men. The nephew died in 1835, childless.
In July 1838 Richard Rush sailed from London aboard the Mediator with eleven boxes holding 104,960 gold sovereigns. Recoined at the Philadelphia mint, it came to more than half a million dollars, from a man nobody in Congress had ever met. They argued for eight years about what to do with it. A national university. An observatory. A library. The act that settled the question passed in 1846.
The building came next. James Renwick Jr. was not yet thirty when he won the competition, and he would later design St Patrick's Cathedral in New York. He gave the Smithsonian nine towers and no symmetry, in red Seneca sandstone quarried up the Potomac in Maryland and floated down by barge. In 1847 nothing else on the Mall looked like this. Nothing else does now.
Smithson himself arrived in 1904. Alexander Graham Bell, then a Regent of the Institution, went to Genoa to collect the remains and bring them back, and they lie in a small crypt just inside the north door. The man who never came here is buried in the building his money paid for.
The Castle closed in February 2023 for its first serious renovation in fifty years. It opened again for the summer of 2026 and closes after Labor Day, 7 September, to finish the work. Open or shut, walk the south side, through the Haupt Garden, and look up at the towers.
