The story

The most famous aeroplane in the world spent twenty years in this building, and it was here because of a grudge.

The Smithsonian in Washington had funded Samuel Langley's Aerodrome, which dropped into the Potomac twice in 1903 without flying, and for years afterwards it went on describing that machine as the first capable of carrying a man in powered flight. Orville Wright had one piece of leverage and he used it. In 1928 he sent the original 1903 Flyer across the Atlantic rather than give it to the national museum of his own country, and here it stayed. The Smithsonian finally published the list of modifications made to the Aerodrome and recanted in 1942. Orville asked for his aeroplane back, but the war kept it in protective storage. He died in January 1948 and never saw it return. That December, on the forty-fifth anniversary of the first flight, his executors sold it to the Smithsonian for one dollar.

Go to Making the Modern World on the ground floor. That is where the Flyer hung, and it is still the best room in the building: the Apollo 10 command module that carried three men around the Moon two months before the landing, the working seventh of Charles Babbage's Difference Engine No. 1, the Crick and Watson DNA model, the first Apple computer.

The museum belongs to the row of institutions raised in South Kensington on the strength of the Great Exhibition of 1851, which is why three national collections stand within a few hundred metres of each other here.

Come on a weekday morning. This is the museum London brings its children to, and by early afternoon in the school holidays you will not hear yourself think in front of the Apollo capsule.

Vaya a Making the Modern World, en la planta baja.

1층 Making the Modern World로 가십시오.

Hãy đến phòng Making the Modern World ở tầng trệt.
