Guide's tip. PIER 39 is not gated and admission is free. Retail, restaurant and attraction hours differ. Sea lion numbers change with migration, so use the live viewing information and observe without feeding, touching or disturbing them.

The story

A few California sea lions began using the docks beside PIER 39 after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Within months their numbers grew into the hundreds. The boats moved elsewhere and K-Dock became a resting place for animals that can travel great distances along the Pacific coast.

The colony is not a fixed exhibition. Numbers rise and fall with food, breeding and migration. Many males leave for the Channel Islands in summer and return later. That seasonal rhythm is why a quieter dock is still an honest visit.

Listen before you look. Barking rolls through the pier, then the animals resolve into bodies, whiskers and flippers on the floating docks. Stay at the viewing rail and let them remain wild. The route continues west along the working waterfront to Musée Mécanique.
