The New York Transit Museum (also called the NYC Transit Museum) is a museum that displays historical artifacts of the New York City Subway, bus, and commuter rail systems in the greater New York City metropolitan region. The main museum is located in the decommissioned Court Street subway station in Downtown Brooklyn and Brooklyn Heights in the New York City borough of Brooklyn.
The story
You enter the New York Transit Museum the way you would enter any subway station: down a staircase on a Brooklyn Heights corner and through the doors where the turnstiles used to be. That is not a design idea. This really is a station. Court Street opened in April 1936 and lasted ten years, a shuttle running three blocks to Hoyt-Schermerhorn that almost nobody rode. It closed in 1946 and sat dark under the street for thirty years, until the city filled it with old trains for the 1976 bicentennial and never took them out.
The platform level is the reason to come. Two tracks of cars built between 1904 and 1992 stand where they would stand at a stop, the advertising placards still in their frames, so you read a century of what New York was being sold. Upstairs, turnstiles from 1904 through 2003.
