The Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (MoCADA), is Brooklyn's first and only contemporary art museum dedicated to the art and culture of Africa and its diaspora.
The story
MoCADA started as a graduate thesis. Studying visual arts administration at New York University in the late 1990s, Laurie Cumbo wrote a proposal for a museum devoted to contemporary art of Africa and its diaspora, then went and built it. She founded MoCADA in 1999, at twenty-four, in a building owned by the Bridge Street AWME Church in Bedford-Stuyvesant. She later served eight years on the City Council and ran the city's Department of Cultural Affairs from 2022 to 2026.
The museum moved to Fort Greene in 2006, into the ground floor of the James E. Davis 80 Arts Building on Hanson Place, and stayed there almost twenty years. That space closed in March 2024. It reopened in January 2025 a few blocks west at 10 Lafayette Avenue, second floor, inside the L10 Arts and Cultural Center.

MoCADA empezó como una tesis de posgrado. A finales de los años noventa, mientras estudiaba gestión de artes visuales en la Universidad de Nueva York, Laurie Cumbo redactó una propuesta para un museo dedicado al arte contemporáneo de África y su diáspora, y después lo levantó. Lo fundó en 1999, con veinticuatro años, en un edificio propiedad de la iglesia Bridge Street AWME, en Bedford-Stuyvesant.
