The story

Stand at the east end of Turtle Pond and look at what the king is doing with his hands. Władysław Jagiełło holds two swords crossed above his head, and those swords are the whole point. Before the Battle of Grunwald in 1410, the Teutonic Knights sent him two bare blades as a taunt, weapons for a man they assumed would not fight. He fought, and he beat them. Stanisław Ostrowski cast this version for the Polish Pavilion at the 1939 World's Fair in Queens. Six months after the pavilion opened, Germany invaded Poland. When the fair closed in 1940 the pavilion's contents could not be sent home, so Robert Moses and Mayor LaGuardia worked with Polish organizations in the city to find the king a place in the park. He was unveiled on 15 July 1945, the 535th anniversary of the battle and two months after V-E Day. The older monument in Warsaw was destroyed by the Germans. This one survived by being stranded.
