The story
The deli is older than the name on the awning. Two brothers, Morris and Hyman Iceland, opened it on Ludlow Street in 1888 and called it Iceland Brothers. Willy Katz arrived in 1903 and the sign became Iceland & Katz. His cousin Benny came in 1910, bought the Icelands out, and only then did it become Katz's. Fifteen years of business happened under someone else's name.
The ticket handed to you at the door is the till. Every station punches your running pre-tax total onto it and you settle on the way out. Lose it and there is a $50 charge, which is why the sign shouts about it.
The slogan on the wall, Send a Salami to Your Boy in the Army, comes from the Second World War. Rose Tarowsky coined it. Her son flew bombers in the South Pacific.

El local es más viejo que el nombre del toldo. Dos hermanos, Morris y Hyman Iceland, lo abrieron en la calle Ludlow en 1888 y lo llamaron Iceland Brothers. Willy Katz llegó en 1903 y el letrero pasó a ser Iceland & Katz. Su primo Benny entró en 1910, compró la parte de los Iceland, y solo entonces se convirtió en Katz's. Quince años funcionando bajo el nombre de otro.

Quán này già hơn cái tên trên bảng hiệu. Năm 1888, hai anh em Morris và Hyman Iceland mở tiệm trên phố Ludlow và đặt tên Iceland Brothers. Năm 1903 Willy Katz vào, bảng hiệu đổi thành Iceland & Katz.
