A museum in Los Angeles. Found because a traveller looked up Starry Night.
The story
The Getty Center is free, and the parking is not. That is the whole ticket structure, and it says something about J. Paul Getty, an oil man who left his fortune to a museum and set it on a ridge above the 405.
You do not drive up. You leave the car in the garage at the bottom and ride a cable-drawn tram up the hill. That ride is deliberate. Richard Meier took the commission in 1984 and finished in 1997, and he wanted arrival to be a climb rather than a walk from a parking lot. It works.
At the top, look at the walls before anything else. There are about 1.2 million square feet of travertine here, 16,000 tons of it, quarried at Bagni di Tivoli, fifteen miles east of Rome. It was not sawn. A guillotine split every block along its natural grain, which leaves the face rough and, more to the point, opens the stone exactly where things were trapped inside it. Fossil leaves, feathers and branches sit in the wall panels. Most visitors walk straight past them to get to the paintings. Put your hand on a block near the arrival plaza and find the imprints before you go in.
The other thing people rush is the Central Garden: 134,000 square feet designed by the artist Robert Irwin, with more than five hundred kinds of plant in it. It is not landscaping around a museum. It is a work in the collection that happens to be alive, and Irwin's own line is cut into a stepping stone in it: always changing, never twice the same.
Go late. The building opens into the evening on Saturdays, the crowd thins after four, and the travertine takes the colour of the light. That is the hour it was built for.
