The Exorcist steps are concrete stairs, continuing 36th Street, descending from the corner of Prospect St and 36th St NW, down to a small parking lot, set back from the intersection of M Street NW, Canal Rd NW, and Whitehurst Freeway NW in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C., famous for being featured in the 1973 film The Exorcist. The story
The stairway was here almost eighty years before the film. George Killeen built it in 1895, alongside the Capital Traction Company car barn at the bottom, as a lightwell and a public right of way. That is why it is so narrow and so steep: it was infrastructure, not a set.
Then 1973, and Father Karras goes out the window and down these steps. Stand at the top and look at the house at 3600 Prospect Street. It does not overlook the stairs at all. A whole lot sits in between, so the crew built a false wing onto the house to close the gap on camera, and padded the treads with half-inch rubber for the fall.
A plaque went in at the base on October 30, 2015, with Mayor Bowser, William Friedkin and William Peter Blatty standing there. Four years later the city made the steps a historic landmark and pointedly did not rest the case on the film. It cited the 1895 car barn instead.

La escalera estaba aquí casi ochenta años antes de la película. George Killeen la construyó en 1895, junto a la cochera de tranvías de la Capital Traction Company que hay al pie, como pozo de luz y paso público. Por eso es tan angosta y tan empinada: era infraestructura, no un decorado.
Llega 1973 y el padre Karras sale por la ventana y cae por estos escalones. Párese arriba y mire la casa del 3600 de Prospect Street. No da a la escalera: entre las dos hay un solar entero.
