The story
This is where most people step onto the Brooklyn Bridge, and in 2026 it changed. For years walkers and cyclists squeezed through one small plaza at the foot of the bridge, and cyclists heading downtown had to cut straight through the crowd. In spring 2026 the city's transportation department built a dedicated bike connection along Centre Street, so for the first time the bike entrance and the walking entrance are fully separate.
Up on the bridge, the wooden promenade has been for people on foot only since September 2021, when a protected bike lane opened on the roadway below. Notice that the river is still blocks away. The deck is high and the shores are low, so the approach starts far inland.
Six days after the bridge opened in 1883, a crush on a narrow staircase near this Manhattan approach killed twelve people. Today the rule is simpler: stay on the walkers' side, and when you reach each tower, turn around, because from here the skyline is behind you.
