The Art Students League of New York Building (also the American Fine Arts Society and 215 West 57th Street) is a building on 57th Street in Midtown Manhattan in New York City. The structure, designed by Henry Janeway Hardenbergh in the French Renaissance style, was completed in December 1892 and serves as the headquarters of the Art Students League of New York.
The story
Three groups of artists could not afford separate buildings, so in 1889 the Art Students League, the Society of American Artists and the Architectural League built one house together. Henry Janeway Hardenbergh won the design competition against thirty other entries, and only after William Morris Hunt was brought in to break a deadlocked jury. The limestone front cost about $200,000 and opened in December 1892.
Look above the center windows on 57th Street. Three plaques read Painting, Architecture, Sculpture, naming what the building was for. Three weeks after it opened, George Washington Vanderbilt II handed over the gallery he had paid for and forgave the construction loan with it.
The League has been the sole occupant since 1941 and still runs the way it started: no degrees, no grades, no admissions committee. Jackson Pollock, Georgia O'Keeffe, Lee Krasner, Mark Rothko and Norman Rockwell all worked in these rooms.
