Two colonnades seventy years apart: twelve Quincy granite Ionic columns from the 1840s, with a Corinthian row added on top in 1910.
The story
Stand across Wall Street and count the columns, then count them again higher up. The bottom row is twelve Ionic columns, each one carved from a single block of granite quarried at Quincy, Massachusetts, and each about thirty feet tall. They were begun in 1836 and finished around 1841, after the Great Fire of December 17, 1835 destroyed the merchants' exchange that stood here before.
The upper row is Corinthian and seventy years younger. Between 1907 and 1910, McKim, Mead and White took the old dome off Isaiah Rogers's building and set five new floors on top of it. Look at the stone. Those upper columns came from Maine and from Rockport, Massachusetts, not from Quincy.
National City Bank moved in on December 19, 1908, carrying five hundred million dollars across the street in leather satchels. The banking hall under the dome is a private event space now, so most days the sidewalk is your view.
