224 West 57th Street, also known as the Argonaut Building and formerly as the Demarest and Peerless Company Building, is a commercial building on the southeast corner of Broadway and 57th Street in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, just south of Columbus Circle. The building consists of two formerly separate structures, the A. T. Demarest & Company Building and the Peerless Motor Car Company Building, both used by automobile companies.
The story
You are standing on Automobile Row. Between about 1907 and the 1920s the stretch of Broadway from 42nd to 72nd Street filled with car showrooms, and this corner is the best surviving piece of it.
Francis H. Kimball designed two buildings here and the George A. Fuller Company started work in March 1909. The Demarest half was finished in June, the Peerless half in September. Both sold cars on the ground floor behind big showroom windows. The facade is almost entirely terracotta, Gothic and Romanesque detail run up a building made to sell automobiles, and the New York Architectural Terra-Cotta Company made the ornament.
General Motors ran its headquarters and showrooms here from 1918 to 1927. Hearst had the offices from 1977 to 2006. The city landmarked the building on 19 December 2000.
